Day 1 -Departure to Abu Dhabi

It took me two weeks to pack my personal belongings. Yes, two weeks. I'd like to blame the restrictions that Etihad had placed on the amount of belongings that I was permitted to take, however it shouldn't have been that difficult to pick out my favorite 150 lbs of crap.

My father works for American Airlines at Chicago's O'hare International airport. Yes the airline industry runs in our blood.

There is something about planes taking off at hundreds of miles an hour into the sky far away, escaping into the clouds. I swear it  is linked to the idea of escaping your worries; to be free and limitless in search of a mental state 100x better than the one you are currently in.

After my father got off of work, he drove home to pick my sister and I up and we headed back to the airport around 9am.

The car ride was particularly emotional, however not as difficult as it was hugging my father and sister, Kaylee, before I left. I don't think I've ever held someone for as long as I held her. It is difficult to say goodbye, but even more difficult when you are exchanging the life you currently have for an unknown life on the opposite side of the globe.

When I stepped onboard the 777, I introduced myself to the  cabin crew. They were incredibly friendly and well mannered, and upgraded me to Business class. There is no first class on this configuration of aircraft, but trust me when I say it was beyond first class standards of all American Aircraft carriers.  Thank God for the upgrade, because there is just no way I could bear a 14.5 hr flight without a lay-flat bed. I have done it before, and I will never do it again. That was in my past life as a peasant. I reinvent myself on a yearly basis, and this years model enjoyed a complimentary 12oz cup of champagne in my slippers with my feet up watching cooking shows in Business Class with gourmet food.
